Introduction

The Mayos traveled to England on a number of occasions to receive honorary diplomas and memberships, speak at medical meetings and hospitals, and to connect with family.

 The Royal Society of Medicine

The Medical and Chirurgical Society of London was officially formed in 1805 to promote discourse and communication among practitioners of the “several branches of the medical profession,” and to found a library.  It was granted a Royal Charter in 1834.  In 1907, a supplementary Royal Charter gave the society its current name.  Dr. Will received this letter and certificate upon election to the society as an Honorary Fellow.

The Royal College of Surgeons began as a trade guild, the Company of Barber-Surgeons, in 1540.  An Act of Parliament split the group in1745, and in 1800 the Company of Surgeons was granted a Royal Charter, becoming the Royal College of Surgeons of London (later RCS England).  The college works to promote surgical specialties in medicine.  This certificate was awarded to Dr. Will upon his election as an Honorary Fellow.
