American Indian Health and Nursing The average life expectancy of a male born on the Pine Ridge reservation in South Dakota today is 40 years oldothe lowest life expectancy of all peoples not only in the U.S. but also in the entire Western Hemisphere. Written by and for nurses, this is the first text to focus exclusively on American Indian health and nursing. It addresses the profound disparities in policy, health care law, and health outcomes that affect American Indians, and describes how these disparities, bound into the cultural, environmental, historical, and geopolitical fabric of American Indian society, are responsible for the marked lack of wellbeing of American Indians. American Indian nurse authors, natives of nine unique American Indian cultures, address the four domains of healthophysical, mental, spiritual, and emotional--within each region to underscore the many stunning disparities of opportunity for health and wellbeing within the American Indian culture as opposed to those of "Anglo" culture. In an era of cultural competency, these expert nurse authors bring awareness about what is perhaps the least understood minority population in the U.S. The text covers the history of American Indians with a focus on the drastic changes that occurred following European contact. Included are relevant journal articles, historical reports, interviews with tribal health officials, and case studies. The book addresses issues surrounding American Indian nursing and nursing education, and health care within nine unique American Indian cultural populations. Also discussed are the health care needs of American Indians living in urban areas. Additionally, the book examines the future of American Indian Nursing in regard to the Affordable Care Act. The Oxford Handbook of Research Strategies for Clinical Psychology Mental health problems impose a staggering worldwide public health burden. Regrettably, whereas many sciences have been progressing for centuries (e.g., biology, chemistry) it is only recently that the strategies of science have been applied to the field of clinical psychology. At thisrelatively early stage in the science of clinical psychology, the majority of work is ahead of us, and as such the prepared investigator must be familiar with the full portfolio of modern research strategies - a set of "directions" for getting from "here" to "there." To continue to move thescience of clinical psychology forward, investigators benefit when they systematically rely on research strategy "routes" that achieve favorable balances between scientific rigor and clinical relevance. With this need in mind, The Oxford Handbook of Research Strategies for Clinical Psychology has recruited some of the field's foremost experts to explicate the essential research strategies currently used across the modern clinical psychology landscape that maximize both precision and significance.Chapters in this volume address design, measurement, and analytic strategies for clinical psychology, including comprehensive coverage of: * effective laboratory methods in experimental psychopathology, single-case experimental designs, small pilot trials, the randomized controlled trial, adaptive and modular treatment designs, and dissemination methods and models* change measurement, observational coding, measurement of process variables across treatment, structural and functional brain imagining, and experience sampling data collection methods * statistical power, correlation and regression, randomized clinical trial data analysis, conventions in mediation and moderation analysis, structural equation modeling, meta-analytic techniques, item-response theory, and the appropriate handling of missing dataThe book concludes with an integrative summary of research strategies addressed across the volume, and guidelines for future directions in research methodology, design, and analysis that will keep our young science moving forward in a manner that maximizes scientific rigor and clinicalrelevance.

The Conversation: a revoltutionary plan for end-of-life There is an unspoken dark side of American medicine--keeping patients alive at any price. Two thirds of Americans die in healthcare institutions, tethered to machines and tubes at bankrupting costs, even though research shows that most prefer to die at home in comfort, surrounded by loved ones. Dr. Angelo E. Volandes believes that a life well lived deserves a good ending. Through the stories of seven patients and seven very different end-of-life experiences, he demonstrates that what people with a serious illness, who are approaching the end of their lives, need most is not new technologies but one simple thing: The Conversation. He argues for a radical re-envisioning of the patient-doctor relationship and offers ways for patients and their families to talk about this difficult issue to ensure that patients will be at the center and in charge of their medical care. It might be the most important conversation you ever have.

Improving Diagnosis in Health Care Getting the right diagnosis is a key aspect of health care - it provides an explanation of a patient's health problem and informs subsequent health care decisions. The diagnostic process is a complex, collaborative activity that involves clinical reasoning and information gathering to determine a patient's health problem. According to Improving Diagnosis in Health Care, diagnostic errors-inaccurate or delayed diagnoses-persist throughout all settings of care and continue to harm an unacceptable number of patients. It is likely that most people will experience at least one diagnostic error in their lifetime, sometimes with devastating consequences. Diagnostic errors may cause harm to patients by preventing or delaying appropriate treatment, providing unnecessary or harmful treatment, or resulting in psychological or financial repercussions. The committee concluded that improving the diagnostic process is not only possible, but also represents a moral, professional, and public health imperative. "Improving Diagnosis in Health Care" a continuation of the landmark Institute of Medicine reports "To Err Is Human" (2000) and "Crossing the Quality Chasm" (2001) finds that diagnosis-and, in particular, the occurrence of diagnostic errorsa "has been largely unappreciated in efforts to improve the quality and safety of health care. Without a dedicated focus on improving diagnosis, diagnostic errors will likely worsen as the delivery of health care and the diagnostic process continue to increase in complexity. Just as the diagnostic process is a collaborative activity, improving diagnosis will require collaboration and a widespread commitment to change among health care professionals, health care organizations, patients and their families, researchers, and policy makers. The recommendations of "Improving Diagnosis in Health Care" contribute to the growing momentum for change in this crucial area of health care quality and safety."

The Leadership Capital Index: realizing the market value of leadership Leadership is critical for any company's success, but how can you put a concrete, measurable value on it? For the first time, David Urlich shows how anyone can effectively evaluate the impact of leadership quality on the market value of any firm.Everyone agrees that much of the success of any company depends on the quality of its leadership. Yet there is has been no rigorous, comprehensive way of rating leadership quality as it relates to company market value-until now. In this book leading scholar, author, and consultant Dave Ulrich provides a "leadership capital index" - a thorough way of assessing how the quality of a company's leadership impacts its value (e.g., like a Moody's index for leadership). Drawing on ten years of work Ulrich finally offers an alternative to the instinctive and subjective approaches people have been forced to take in the past.In successive chapters, Ulrich develops multiple dimensions of this leadership capital index, including leaders' personal abilities (their personal proficiency, strategic proficiency, execution proficiency, people proficiency, and leadership brand proficiency) and organizational leadership capabilities (cultural capability, talent management, performance accountability, information management systems, and work process). The result is a groundbreaking book that opens up a major new area of understanding and analysis of business and leadership.

Implementing SAP® CRM: the guide for business and technology managers In today's competitive business environment, most companies realize that the better they can manage their customer relationships, the more successful they will become. Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software systems are key tools for companies to manage the customer-facing processes of their businesses. However, many companies have resisted implementing this most critical customer-oriented application due in large part to the lack of a single-point resource on implementing a CRM system. This book attempts to fill that gap. Implementing SAP® CRM will help technologists and managers come to grips with the vision, concept, and technology of CRM. It begins by laying out the groundwork for understanding CRM. It explains the concept and context of CRM and the tangible business benefits of CRM adoption. Demonstrating a professional approach to the evaluation and selection of SAP, it details the critical success factors (CSFs), patterns, and anti-patterns of a successful SAP CRM implementation. CRM implementations can add significant benefit to the company's bottom line only if the company first transforms itself into a customer-centric and customer-responsive enterprise. This book explains what it means to be a customer-centric and responsive enterprise, and provides a framework for business operations based on customer relationships, rather than the traditional four Ps (product, positioning, price, promotion). It further spells out business process reengineering (BPR) strategies to configure internal business processes and operations with SAP CRM to improve customer-facing strategies, services, and relationships.
Intelligent Disobedience: doing right when what you're told to do is wrong Torture in Abu Ghraib prison. Corporate fraud. Falsified records at Veterans Administration hospitals. Teachers pressured to feed test answers to students. These scandals could have been prevented if, early on, people had said no to their higher-ups. In this timely new book, Ira Chaleff goes deeply into when and how to disobey inappropriate orders, reduce unacceptable risk, and find better ways to achieve legitimate goals. The inspiration for the book, and its title, came from a concept used in guide dog training. Guide dogs must be able to recognize a command that would put their human and themselves at risk, effectively resist the command, and identify safer options for achieving the goal. This is precisely what Chaleff shows humans how to do. He delves into the psychological dynamics of obedience, drawing in particular on what Stanley Milgram's seminal Yale experiments - in which volunteers were induced to administer shocks to innocent people - teach us about how to reduce compliance with harmful orders. Using dozens of vivid examples of historical events and everyday situations, Chaleff offers advice on judging whether intelligent disobedience is called for, how to effectively express opposition, and how to create a culture where, rather than "just following orders," citizens are educated and encouraged to think about whether those orders make sense.

Connected CRM: implementing a data-driven, customer-centric business strategy Three macro trends are changing the marketing landscape and forcing massive change on most organizations: the digitization of media and channels; social media; and the ability for consumers to access media anytime, anywhere. Marketers are responding with data-driven, digital customer strategies and a collective business model transformation. For the first time, marketers are now able to put customers at the core of the business strategy. The challenge, now that there's "universal" buy-in on the philosophy, of 'every organization should be ?customer-centric? is the "how". How do we successfully implement a comprehensive, data-driven, customer-centric business strategy? The answer is called "Connected CRM", the focus of this book. Customer-centric marketing isn't merely a tactical implementation plan. Executed correctly, it's a fundamental shift in the organization's framework, affecting every department, not just marketing, though it puts marketing at the heart of the business and leadership strategy for the organization. It's a new source of visibility and accountability for the CMO and a new basis of competitive differentiation for the company. CMOs of the future will play a much larger role in all aspects of marketing, sales, service and technology. Through years of work in data-driven customer relationship marketing and observations of successful (and unsuccessful) implementation efforts; Merkle has developed a customer-centricity blueprint for organizations. This book explains how to make it a reality'for sustained competitive advantage.

Subliminal: how your unconscious mind rules your behavior Winner of the 2013 PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award Over the past two decades of neurological research, it has become increasingly clear that the way we experience the world--our perception, behavior, memory, and social judgment--is largely driven by the mind's subliminal processes and not by the conscious ones, as we have long believed. As in the bestselling The Drunkard's Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives, Leonard Mlodinow employs his signature concise, accessible explanations of the most obscure scientific subjects to unravel the complexities of the subliminal mind. In the process he shows the many ways it influences how we misperceive our relationships with family, friends, and business associates; how we misunderstand the reasons for our investment decisions; and how we misremember important events--along the way, changing our view of ourselves and the world around us.

Measuring the Impact of Interprofessional Education on Collaborative Practice and Patient Outcomes Interprofessional teamwork and collaborative practice are emerging as key elements of efficient and productive work in promoting health and treating patients. The vision for these collaborations is one where different health and/or social professionals share a team identity and work closely together to solve problems and improve delivery of care. Although the value of interprofessional education (IPE) has been embraced around the world - particularly for its impact on learning - many in leadership positions have questioned how IPE affects patent, population, and health system outcomes. This question cannot be fully answered without well-designed studies, and these studies cannot be conducted without an understanding of the methods and measurements needed to conduct such an analysis. This Institute of Medicine report examines ways to measure the impacts of IPE on collaborative practice and health and system outcomes. According to this report, it is possible to link the learning process with downstream person or population directed outcomes through thoughtful, well-designed studies of the association between IPE and collaborative behavior. "Measuring the Impact of Interprofessional Education on Collaborative Practice and Patient Outcomes" describes the research needed to strengthen the evidence base for IPE outcomes. Additionally, this report presents a conceptual model for evaluating IPE that could be adapted to particular settings in which it is applied. "Measuring the Impact of Interprofessional Education on Collaborative Practice and Patient Outcomes" addresses the current lack of broadly applicable measures of collaborative behavior and makes recommendations for resource commitments from interprofessional stakeholders, funders, and policy makers to advance the study of IPE.

Root cause analysis (RCA) provides a systematic approach to identifying those contributing factors. RCA is also beneficial as a proactive tool to identify potential safety problems before they reach the patient. RCA is an effective tool that can help health care organizations that have experienced a patient safety event, as well as those working to improve their patient safety systems or achieve high reliability, to do the following: Ensure reliable processes Decrease variation and defects (waste) Achieve better outcomes Use evidence to ensure that a service is satisfactory New for 2015, Root Cause Analysis in Health Care: Tools and Techniques, 5th ed., updates the bestselling fourth edition. The book provides a framework for conducting an effective RCA, both proactively and as a response to a sentinel event. The fifth edition reflects recent revisions to Joint Commission standards and the Sentinel Event Policy, and includes a wealth of new tools and case studies. A new appendix to the fifth edition discusses alternative methods of comprehensive systematic analysis, including common cause analysis, human factors analysis, and others.

Re-envisioning the Patient Experience Patient experience is at the intersection of two major trends in the American health care marketplace: value-based payment and consumerism. Health care organizations need to focus on delivery an excellent patient experience because, increasingly, their reimbursements are tied to achieving high levels of patient satisfaction. By the same token, as consumers take more control over choosing providers and insurance plans, the quality of the patient experience will be ever more important.
