Evidence Synthesis Guide : Preparation

This guide provides information and resources which may be helpful when undertaking a systematic review, scoping review or other type of evidence synthesis review.

Preparing for your Review

Undertaking any scientific study requires planning and preparation prior to initiating the project.

  1. Assemble your research & review team.
  2. Take the time and effort to hone your research question.
  3. Develop a timeline for your project.
  4. Determine how best to manage your project and meet assigned deadlines.
  5. Institute a communication plan for the review team members.

Consult Cochrane Interactive Learning Module 1. Introduction to Conducting Systematic Reviews for further information.  *Please note you will need to register for a Cochrane account while initially on the Mayo network. You'll receive an email message containing a link to create a password and activate your account.*

Target Journals for Future Publication

As you assemble a team and develop your research question, think about which journals might publish your completed review.

  • What is the topic of your review?
  • Are there journals that have published evidence synthesis reviews on similar or related subjects?
  • Read some of the reviews that have been published in your targeted journals.
  • Read the journal's instructions for authors. What reporting guidelines are required for a systematic review?
